    A recent study revealed that 85% of global consumers have changed their buying habits in the past five years to increase their sustainability

    Another study from IBM found that of consumers who said sustainability is important to them, 70% would pay a premium price to support more sustainable and environmentally responsible brands.

    Consumers are demanding more sustainability from brands, and they’re willing to invest in products from companies playing their part to help the planet. How can brands keep up with consumer demand and take steps toward going green?

    One simple way companies — particularly those in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) sector — can appeal to these consumers and do their part to help the environment is to invest in sustainable packaging material. 

    What Is Green Packaging?

    The term “green packaging” refers to packaging that is more environmentally friendly than standard options companies may choose for their products.

    What Packaging Constitutes As “Green Packaging”?

    Sustainable packaging options can also be broken into several different categories depending on the materials it’s made from and how it’s disposed of.

    Green packaging can include:

    • Recyclable Packaging: This is made from materials that can be recycled at traditional facilities. Recyclable refers to what can be done with the packaging after it’s useful life is over. 
    • Post-Consumer Recycled Packaging: PCR refers to new packaging made from materials that have already been disposed of and recycled and turned into new packaging.
    • Biodegradable Packaging: Often made from plant based or bio-plastic materials, this packaging may have microorganisms that help break down the materials.
    • Compostable Packaging: Packaging is made from natural plant materials that can return to the earth naturally and help the planet’s systems regrow.

    Did You Know? All compostable packaging is biodegradable packaging but not all biodegradable packaging is compostable.

    Traditional Plastic Packaging Can Have Harmful Effects

    Plastics also take years to break down. Plastic bags can take 20 years to break down — and coffee pods can take 500, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Even as they break down, plastics aren’t naturally occurring, so they break down into smaller pieces. They can break into tiny particles called microplastics that are anywhere from five millimeters small to microscopic.

    Green Packaging Is Better for the Planet

    Containers and packaging made up to 82.2 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2018, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Plastic containers and packaging alone accounted for an estimated 14.5 million tons of this waste.

    Of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and jars — the material most plastic products are made from — the agency estimated that only 29.1% was recycled.

    Whether brands use recycled materials in packaging or make the packaging itself recyclable, green packaging lessens environmental impacts to benefit the planet.

    When brands choose green packaging, that has a positive impact on the earth, its ecosystems, and overall sustainability.

    Recyclable Materials

    What Is Sustainable Packaging?

    Managing packaging materials with a sustainable, circular economy in mind is key to addressing the enormous amount of packaging waste that hits landfills every year. A circular economy is designing a packaging strategy with zero waste in mind.  Currently, around 91 percent of packaging waste is sent to landfills or ends up in the environment. In 2019, U.S. landfills released around 114.5 million metric carbon tons of carbon dioxide equivalent of methane into the atmosphere. 

    Methane is 25 more times potent than carbon dioxide in accelerating global warming. There is tremendous opportunity for businesses to reduce and/or redesign the current packaging industry by investing time and resources into supporting and utilizing sustainable materials.     The Best Eco Friendly Packaging Materials For Your Business

    Before diving into the various sustainable packing options available, your business should actually make a point to also develop reduction and reuse goals. The most sustainable option is to simply use less materials, and many times businesses discover there are untapped opportunities to reduce packaging demand or to integrate innovative, sustainable ideas into packaging. Many of these untapped opportunities also reduce costs. An example would be to reuse cardboard boxes received from vendors to pack outgoing products, increasing the usefulness of the cardboard boxes, and reducing the need for your business to purchase additional cardboard.

    Other ideas include reducing the size or quantity of packaging, reducing the thickness of packages, switching to bulk ordering for inbound packaging, and working with vendors to establish take-back programs and utilizing packaging that can be reused. It is important to note that not all of these strategies may also apply to your business or your products, and that they must be fully vetted to ensure they match your product needs. The most effective, comprehensive sustainable packaging strategy is to work to reduce and reuse resources while sourcing packing.

    What is Considered Sustainable Packing Materials?

    Sustainable packaging is a broad term that encompasses many different realms of sustainability.

    The Sustainable Packaging Coalition provides a set of criteria on what constitutes sustainable packaging materials, stating that sustainable packaging:

    Is beneficial, safe & healthy for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle

    Meets market criteria for performance and cost

    Is sourced, manufactured, transported, and recycled using renewable energy

    Optimizes the use of renewable or recycled source materials

    Is manufactured using clean production technologies and best practices

    Is made from materials healthy throughout the life cycle

    Is physically designed to optimize materials and energy

    Is effectively recovered and utilized in biological and/or industrial closed loop cycles

    These criteria are a suggested framework for understanding sustainable packaging, and it is important to note that many sustainable packaging materials will include some (but not all) of the above criteria. Implementing sustainable design techniques into packaging is designing packaging with the main end-goal of doing as little harm to environment as possible. There are many ways to achieve this, and design is one technique to include in your overall materials strategy. When looking to understand and design sustainable, flexible packaging, keep the Sustainability Packaging Coalition’s sustainable packaging principles in mind.

    Why is Sustainably Design Packaging Important?

    Investing in sustainable packaging helps reduce your company’s carbon footprint and shows a commitment to improving and protecting the planet. Whether it is candy, cosmetics, spices, coffee, food, or any other packaging, the quality of a packaging product is increasingly determined by the sustainability of the product.  Additionally, investors and consumers alike are demanding that companies prove their commitment to meeting sustainability goals, pledges, and promises, through meaningful, measurable actions throughout the supply chain. 

    Companies are beginning to turn their backs to the continued use of plastic packaging materials (when possible), and to stay relevant and competitive within the realm of sustainability and ESG your business should consider doing the same. More than 70% of packaging customers do not mind paying a premium for sustainable packaging materials – check out additional tips on what to consider when assessing packaging for your business.

    Examples of Sustainable Packaging

    Rapid innovation and thoughtful design have led to a variety of packaging options that are much more eco-friendly than typical, single-use plastic materials. Some of the most sustainable packaging on the market to choose from includes plant-based, cardboard, recycled plastic, bioplastic, and organic fabric packaging. Each provides its own benefits and drawbacks (learn more about the pros and cons of eco-friendly packaginghere), but all move you closer to packaging that supports a more circular economy while promoting the sustainability and brand of your business.

    Plant-based Compostable Materials

    The packaging market has dived into more creative materials sourced from plants, including cornstarch, mushroom, and seaweed packaging. Typically, these products are more likely to be eco-friendly because they may be compostable, or break-down much faster than traditional plastics. The production of these materials is also usually better for the environment, in that it leads to less greenhouse gas emissions released. Due to increased demand and a need to preserve the environment, many packaging companies (like us!) are developing a variety of recyclable, compostable and biodegradable packaging options for businesses to capitalize on.

    Cornstarch

    Cornstarch: is derived from corn and has similar properties to traditional plastic, making it a versatile, flexible packaging option that can be used for bottles, packing peanuts, insulation, or general molded forms. Many of the cornstarch packaging options will dissolve when placed under hot water, effectively eliminating any product going to the landfill. Cornstarch packaging is biodegradable and usually compostable but breaks down much faster in a composting facility than an at-home compost set up. The potential downsides of utilizing cornstarch are that it increases demand for corn itself and for the water used to grow corn. While corn is heavily subsidized by the U.S. and relatively inexpensive, most of the U.S. is facing a looming water shortage crisis in the near future. Additionally, there will be a need for increased agricultural land use to accommodate cornstarch production. Wheat starch is another, similar sustainable packaging material utilized in biodegradable packing peanuts for the same outcome – the ability to dissolve in water or be composted, resulting in zero waste.

    Mushroom

    Mushroom packaging is an affordable, up-and-coming plant packaging product that can hold smaller items and is used in lieu of Styrofoam. Like the name suggests, this packaging is made from mushrooms that bind together farming residue products. Since the farming residue would normally be discarded, this innovative sustainable packaging instead upcycles the material for continued use. Additionally, another positive for mushroom packaging is this residue was already created from other agricultural demands, whereas the corn for corn starch would be grown solely for packaging. This packaging material is 100% compostable (both in facilities or at home) and biodegradable, made of renewable materials without any petroleum products, and contributes to building a circular economy by helping eliminate waste sent to landfills. Mushroom packaging materials require low energy use for creation and generate low greenhouse gas emissions. Mushroom packaging is a great replacement for Styrofoam, and an excellent sustainable option to utilize where appropriate.

    Seaweed

    A team of innovative packaging designers were recently celebrated for prototyping seaweed as packaging material. Seaweed is a plentiful, renewable resource already being utilized in the food industry. Seaweed grows within 45 days, requires no fertilizer, can be immediately harvested, and does not require any chemical processing. The seaweed production process is much faster than growing corn, which requires land and fertilizer to grow. The yeast residue from seaweed production can be added to animal feed, meaning that seaweed packaging is a zero-waste product. There is currently a large amount of seaweed produced in Indonesia that is not being utilized, so adopting seaweed packaging not only supports a healthy planet, but also supports Indonesian farmers and takes advantage of an already-plentiful available resource. It is important to note that seaweed packaging is a relatively new design and is currently only sensible for smaller packaging needs. As technology advances alongside companies looking to green up their supply chain, advances in seaweed packaging will continue and seaweed may become a more mainstream, viable option for larger-scale product needs.

    While none of the above packaging materials are a one-stop-shop to meeting all your sustainability goals, exploring how they can fit into your packaging needs is a great way to invest in sustainable packaging.

    Recycled Cardboard/Paper Packaging Materials

    Sustainability sourced, recycled cardboard and paper are some of the most recyclable materials on the market. Cardboard is the current industry standard in the ecommerce business, and is used to ship over 90% of products in the U.S. Work to source recycled cardboard and paper as packaging, as new cardboard and paper products emit a large amount of greenhouse gas emissions during the production process and require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Look for FSC-certified, recycled paper to ensure you are supporting sustainably managed forests and associated paper products. Cardboard and paper materials are where your sustainability packaging strategy comes in – implement reduction, reuse, recycle and redesign techniques to minimize environmental impacts when using cardboard or paper materials. Most cardboard and paper can also be composted at its end of life, which is a great way for these materials to avoid the landfill. Cardboard boxes can be recycled up to 25 times before reaching end of life, so develop a strategy to reuse these boxes and paper as much as possible, and to encourage your consumer base to do the same.

    Recycled Plastic Materials – Post Consumer Recycled Plastics and Packaging

    Hardy plastic is still one of the sturdiest materials available and is renowned for supporting heavy shipments or items, and can aid in keeping food fresh. When needing to use plastic materials, source 100% recycled plastic to increase the lifespan of the plastic and keep it out of the landfill as long as possible. Be mindful of the amount of plastic needed and use only the required amount of plastic necessary to keep the items safe from damage.

    Bioplastic Materials

    Another option is to utilize bioplastics, which were created to help phase out traditional plastics. The plant-based cornstarch and wheat packaging materials previously mentioned are typically bioplastics.  Bioplastics are biodegradable plastics used in food packaging and mailers, and are usually made from corn starch, sugarcane, or cassava sugars. Polylactic acid (PLA) is the most common bioplastic in the market today. Bioplastics provide an alternative to regular plastic, which takes thousands of years to break down and is made from nonrenewable sources. While bioplastic production produces less greenhouse gas emissions than traditional plastic production, there are still downsides to bioplastics. These downsides include creating additional demand for energy, land, and water to produce bioplastics, which may lead to accelerated deforestation. Bioplastic material is a better not best option, and a great steppingstone for phasing out of traditional plastics toward more biodegradable, sustainable materials.

    Organic Fabrics and Packaging

    Where possible, evaluate replacing plastic bags with organic reusable bags. There are a variety of different organic fabrics available on the market now, including hemp, cotton, palm leaves, and tapioca fabrics. All of these fabrics have the ability to biodegrade much faster than plastic, and can also be reused by customers for other purposes (like a shopping or storage bag). If you use reusable bags, be sure and market to your customer base the reusability of the brands bags.

    How to Choose Which Sustainable Packaging is Right for Your Business

    Choosing the most appropriate sustainable packing material for your business comes down to what your brands needs and what you are looking to prioritize. Do you need a more flexible material that can be used in a variety of ways? Cornstarch packaging could be right for you. Looking for a zero waste, Styrofoam substitute? Mushroom packaging is the way to go. There is tremendous opportunity to create more sustainable packaging operations (and reduce costs) just by conducting an audit of current packaging materials and methods, and evaluating opportunities to reduce, reuse, or redesign your system. While achieving a circular economy with zero waste is a difficult task in the packaging industry, amazing progress has been made toward reducing and eliminating unnecessary packaging waste.     The term Poly bags most specifically refers to mono-layer polyethylene bags which are the most used type of plastic bags globally for many applications. But the term has also come to refer more generally to any plastic bag even multi-ply laminated bags. Poly bags are flexible and inexpensive, proving to be great alternatives to cardboard boxes and other rigid space-consuming packaging.

    The easiest items to find are the flat poly wholesale bags. These types of plastic bags are everywhere: storing food, electronic parts, hospital materials. They are those tiny zipper bag that are flat, reclosable poly bags, and hold the nuts and bolts and other pieces of the desk you bought to assemble at home. You can even see them on a roll when grocery shopping.

    Types of Zippers for your poly bags

    Just like barrier films, there are many options to choose from according to your needs, products, and packaging styles. Here are some of the options we provide:

    Standard Flange Zippers

    The most common and popular type of zipper. They have interlocking tracks on each side of the plastic bags that your press together to seal the pouch. They are also FDA-approved and very easy to proof and handle.

    Wide Flange Zippers

    This style has a longer lip above the zipper, providing more room for the customer to tear the pouch open without ruining the zipper while adding a nicer look to the bag

    String Zippers

    These are a no-flange zipper design, so it can’t really be called a barrier-type zipper. It’s the most economical option and can be produced faster since it requires less material than the other styles.

    EZ Pull or Pull Tab Zippers

    These are a newer zipper style, considered more convenient. In this type, the pouch can be opened by pulling a tear strip added in the front of the package without ripping the material or using scissors. To reseal the bag, all you have to do is press the top zipper together.

    Dual Track/ Heavy Duty Flange Zippers

    Similar to the standard zipper but with double vinyl tracks. They provide high resistance to the seal and prevent accidents due to this double safety. It is designed to handle heavy products, larger bags, and more opening-closing operations.

    Powder Zippers

    These are designed to prevent particles and crumbs from getting stuck in the zipper’s tracks, which can reduce the seal’s efficacy. These are used for fine powders and granulated products like flour and protein powders. Add them to your adhesive poly bag today. 

    Child Resistant Zippers

    It is a particular zipper style developed in a way that only adults can open it. Products that can be harmful to children as pharmaceuticals and medicinal cannabis, must meet government regulations towards their packaging.     Tin Ties

    Tin Ties are not zippers, but they server a similar function. A tin tie is a laminated metal strip coated in plastic that is attached to one side of the bag near its opening. To close the pouch top, the top is folded downwards, and each side of the strip is pressed against the packaging. As if the strip is “hugging” the bag and keeping it shut. It’s a very traditional seal, largely used in the coffee industry.

    Lip and Seal Tape

    Seal tape is another example of a non-zipper, performing a similar function. Seal tape is typically designed as either the initial low barrier closer (think poly mailer plastic bags), or as a single use re-closure. You might ask: Who would want to have a bag that can only be reused one time? The answer is typically specimen containers, or send back bags, where you want to ensure the consumer has fully and tightly closed the bag.

    How to Choose the Right Zipper?

    One of the most frequent questions we receive is how to choose between Tin Tie and EZ Pull Zippers. We will go through each one’s pros and cons to try to make your decision easier.

    Tin Tie

    Pros:

    • Tin Tie adds a traditional and fancy look to your bag while hiding the heat-sealed area.
    • It’s easy to use in the top loading process and by the end consumer. 
    • It also provides extra convenience by letting the customer know how much product is left when looking at how low is the folded tin tie.

    Cons:

    • This sealing style adds a few extra steps in manufacturing. After the bag is filled and heat-sealed, the tin tie is applied, the pouch is folded down, and tape shut so it won’t fall apart in transit. This increases production costs and time.
    • Another disadvantage is the reduced barrier when the bag is reclosed. A folded bag doesn’t entirely prevent contact with oxygen and moisture, 
    •  Also, if you want your customer to open the bag more easily without tearing it or using scissors, you will need to incorporate an EZ peel material, which is more costly than a regular heat seal material.

    EZ Pull

    Pros:

    • Its greatest advantage is already in the name. It’s easy to load it – the bag is loaded through the top and sealed, without any extra step. It’s easy for the customer to open and close it without any tool.
    • The press-to-close zipper provides a higher barrier after resealed, increasing shelf life. Since there is no tearing, the header’s design is untouched, and there isn’t a waste of material after the bag is open.
    • Plus, being about 3-5 cents cheaper per unit is a higher economic advantage.

    Cons:

    • Since this is a newer style types, more traditional customers may not like it. Some may even find it a little harder to scoop out the product through the zipper since the top of the wrap bag is sealed.
    • Also, the zipper takes some space of the header, getting in the way of the design, and the pouch might look less tidy when it the strapping is open.

    10 Mistakes to Avoid When Creating Packaging Dielines

    When designing a packaging dieline, there are a lot of factors to consider.  Issues with sizing, spacing, color fidelity, and regulatory compliance all play a part in your dieline packaging design process. We often see the same set of packaging design mistakes and want you to avoid those in your next project. Those custom dieline mistakes can be divided into issues with your art setup and issues with your proofing.

    Art Setup Mistakes (Top 5)

    Getting your images and your packaging art just right is both an art and a science. Here are the top five issues we see with art setup during custom dieline creation. 

    1. Use Adobe Illustrator

    When professionally printing packaging elements you need everything you design to be in Adobe Illustrator (AI). Adobe Illustrator is the industry gold standard for artwork. Other paid and free solutions such as photoshop, Inkscape, BoxySVG, and other document file formats such as  PSD, EPS and SVG are perfectly suitable, but in order to adhere to industry best practices and standards for artwork design, AI is the preferable program. One of the main reasons for using AI is that original art developed in AI is natively vectorized.

    2. Create All Art as a Vector

    Vector art or “vectorized art” is art that is created based on mathematical formulas for the exact size of the cut lines (don’t worry no math is required to make vectorized art!) Vectors never loses resolution no matter what level you zoom in because a vector is not a picture. There is no pixilation with a vector.  Logos must be a vector. So do any words printed on the packaging, especially nutrition information. 

    Digital photography does not produce a vector. It takes in light through the camera’s lens and converts it into a digital file. That file, however, becomes pixelated when you zoom in. This is incredibly important to consider for your finished packaging. 

    Here is an example of a vectorized design when viewed in the designs “outlines” mode.

    A good rule of thumb? Make sure that everything that is not an image on your packaging designs is a vector.

    This makes it easy to create a PDF ahead of production. 

    In order to maintain compliance with governmental regulations, the nutrition information you enter or send cannot pixelate should you adjust the dieline’s size. Barcodes, which must be scannable on your finished product, are especially susceptible to pixilation. Make sure that you design your dieline’s barcode as a vector rather than a picture.

    3. CMYK versus Pantone 

    CMYK stands for “Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black,” and it represents the four basic colors used when printing graphics, images, and other media. Pantone, on the other hand, is a color matching system. Pantone includes a comprehensive set of ink pigments called “color bars” which resemble paint samples from the hardware store.

    CMYK takes those four color choices and blends them together in a subtractive process in order to make all the colors of the rainbow. The drawback is that every printer has slightly different output. The resulting color is a function of the blending process rather than an industry-wide standard. 

    Your finished document will most likely be on some blend of plastic packaging, not on printed paper. Things don’t always translate correctly, especially if you are using CMYK. This is where Pantone truly shines. Each color bar in the Pantone collection includes the exact formulation for that pigment. Any element on your dieline that is not a digital photo should be rendered in Pantone coloring rather than CMYK for the sake of continuity.  

    4. If You Have To Include A Picture, Make Sure The Resolution Is Correct

    Not everything can be a vector. Sometimes your packaging calls for the use of a digital picture. Make sure you use the correct print resolution to prevent your included photos from pixilation. 300 DPI is the minimum choice for high resolution prints. 300 DPI resolution includes 90,000 dots per square inch which can help stave off pixilation should your finished packaging require you to zoom in. Preferably you want the highest DPI / PPI possible, 600, 800 or more. 

    5. Do Your Diligence When Including Images

    Normally when you use images rather than vectors to create your own dielines, they are embedded directly into the dieline products. You can also choose to link those images to a specific file or folder. When the packaging dieline renders in AI for production, it draws the image from another source. One problem we see routinely is that people forget to properly link the image. If you choose not to embed an image on your package, make sure you’ve done your diligence.  

    Proofing Mistakes (Top 5)

    Creating graphical elements is only the first step in the design process. Every dieline requires thorough proofing before it is finalized. Here are the five most common mistakes we see with the proofing phase.

    1. Proofread

    One of the most commonly overlooked processes is proofreading the text on your bag. Small errors in spelling can result in huge errors in customer understanding, but beyond that, a seemingly innocuous mistake could throw your packaging out of compliance with governmental regulations. 

    2. Check Your Sizing and Spacing

    It begins with ensuring that the size of your products packaging is adequate and unaltered after adjustments in your design software. Too many industry professionals forget to make sure that the overall bag dimensions fit the product they’re intended for. One sure fire test you can use is to measure your dieline against a competitor’s product to ensure it fits. 

    3. Outline Your text

    Fonts can be tricky things. They are dependent on files in order to display correctly. Different devices render the same font differently depending on the file packs that are installed. Outlining is a way to ensure continuity between displays. By outlining your fonts, which is a relatively simple process via AI’s editing software, you convert the font into art, much the same as a vector. That way image fidelity is maintained no matter what workspace you are using. See our how-to on outlining text

    4. Ensure Compliance

    We’ve mentioned it before, but compliance is an important part of the dieline process. Far too many people fail to check that the barcode they’ve included serves its intended function. Rather than interacting with the merchant’s POS system, a barcode that hasn’t been properly vetted may spit back gibberish. 

    In the same vein, there is a virtual cavalcade of regulations from entities like the FDA and the USDA which impact the icons and images on your finished packaging. When proofing, make sure to take the necessary time to ensure that your packing meets all regulatory compliance. 

    5. Don’t Cram Too Much Into Your Dieline

    Along the same lines as sizing and spacing, make sure you don’t place visual elements like logos, verbiage, and graphics jammed into the edges of your bag. Not only does it make the packing incredibly difficult to read, it may also violate the above-stated compliance issue. 

    Designing a High-Quality Dieline

    Graphical design is as much an art form as it is an exact science. There are dozens of exact specifications that need to be met in terms of color, spacing, typeset, and overall resolution. With so many variables to keep track of, it is all too easy to make a mistake.

    The American Society for Testing and Materials describes a child-resistant bag as one that makes it hard for children below 5 to open or access its contents within a specified timeframe.

    Child-resistant stand-up pouches are categorized into single-use and re-closable variants.  single-use child resistant pouches are only child resistant until they are opened by the consumer. while the re-closable can be re-closed by the consumer and retain their child resistance. 

    In this article, we will compare re-closeable and single-use stand-up pouches to help you choose which one is fit for you.

    Re-closable Pouches

    Re-closable pouches are also loosely called Lifetime Child Resistant Pouches because they can be used multiple times and retain the same level of safety they had before they were opened. The idea behind “Lifetime” is that the pouch will remain child resistant during the “lifetime” of the consumption of the product inside the pouch.

    So for example, if a pouch containers 4 servings of cannabis edibles the “lifetime” of the pouch is being opened and closed 4 times.  A child below 5 cannot multitask. Manufacturers of re-closable bags use this knowledge to create pouches that a child finds hard to open before they get tired and give up. Lifetime pouches typically have a two-step opening process.

    Push and turn, a two-piece molding with the benefit of providing the child with false interactivity is one of the three most common child-resistant mechanisms.

    Secondly, there are squeeze and turn packs, which are typically single-piece moldings, and are very common in homes. Finally, there’s the ‘line up the arrows’ closing method where two fixed points on the package and the closure must be matched to open the pouch.

    Sophisticated lifetime bags such as the pharmacy zipper bags only open with two hands. They are easy for adults, including those weakened by medical conditions to open but a child has a very hard time trying to open them. The child-guard push-pin zipper bag works by inserting a pin to open the sliding zipper. These pouches have tons of other benefits.

    Single-use Pouches

    Common single-use pouches are designed to not have an easy open feature, and so require the use of a scissor or knife to open it.  They are popular for packaging single servings of drugs including medical cannabis.  Blister packs have polymer trays whose opening is sealed to aluminum lidding foil. 

    A single-use package only maintains the approved standard of child resistance as long as it has not been opened.

    To make these packs child-resistant, packaging manufacturers use a two-step opening process and add a paper label that children can’t easily peel off.

    Typical single-use pouches include sample packs, fold-overs, stand-up, and pillow pouches. While they are not built to maintain their child resistance after opening, they do provide a single use child resistance and they still offer all the great barrier properties needed to keep the contents at optimal freshness until  the pack is opened.

    There’s been growing concern over the contribution of single-use packs in filling landfills and pollution. In this case, your company has to emphasize the need to dispose of the pack safely after use.

    Child-Resistant Exit Bags

    Some Child Resistant Exit Bags used by dispensaries for cannabis are made from a combination of child psychology and modern technology.  These pouches only open when an adult inserts their fingers under the flaps to access the closing. The closing opens with upward and rolling movements.

    This opening method is incomprehensible to children under five. When a child uses this pouch, they still pull at the flaps and expect it to open which does not work.

    These pouches are also odor-proof, bar UV light from interfering with content quality, and are moisture-resistant. They are perfect for storing powder and granules too.

    Why are they called Exit Bags? In most states cannabis regulation is a subset of the state’s liquor control laws. Often the same agency that regulates the sale of alcohol also regulates cannabis. Many states require that any product sold by a dispensary be placed in Child Resistant outer packaging before it leaves the dispensary, also called “Exit Packaging.”

    The Process

    Continue to read to learn more about the pouch manufacturing process. Stand up packaging bags are built from plastic composed of a resin of granular polyethylene. This composition makes it easy to melt and flatten into different shapes.

    This material is then used to create a long polyethylene tube. This tube can be over a mile long, but the cloth used to make it has a width of less than a tenth of a millimeter. This tube is allowed to cool before being flattened by a series of rollers into a long strip of plastic. The strip is wound on a cylinder to form a sheet.

    Each bag has several films with each one made with materials that play into the water-proof and airtight features of the bag. Manufacturers select the materials carefully to ensure the packs are also durable.

    The innermost layer keeps the content quality intact. It also comes into direct contact with the pack’s content. Therefore, it is made of the polymer LLDPE which is FDA-approved.

    The outermost layer often bears the company name and other branding messages. Manufacturers use alcohol-based ink to print words and images on these packs.

    When the middle layer material is not made of clear material, it serves as a protective and branding layer. To achieve this, manufacturers opt for aluminum or films infused with metal or resin.  Some companies choose kraft paper material for the outermost layer because it looks natural. Kraft material is also durable and has a texture designed to make branding easy.

    These layers are then cut into different sizes and shapes then stuck together through sealing by applying heat. A large conversion machine receives the finished film roll. The film is cut into various parts as it goes through the system, forming the top part, rear, and underside of the stand up pouch. 

    Gussets are the bottom part and the reason a stand up pouch can stand. Part of the material used to make the rest of the bag goes through a machine that folds a perfect W-shaped gusset.

    Functionality features are added separately depending on the pack. For example, spaces for handles are created through cutting with stamps. Zip locks are bound to the pack through heat.  Perforations indicating where to cut are also added at the last bit in the process.

    The layers must be cured in a special high-temperature drying chamber after the lamination process. If laminated films are not properly cured, they can peel apart days or weeks after the bags are completed. Drying takes 2–4 days, and regardless of the deadline, this part cannot be rushed.

    However, not all stand up packs are of good quality. Like with every other products, the cheaper they are, the poorer their quality.

    In the United States, stand up bags use is rapidly on the rise. Traditional packaging techniques, which are bulkier, more expensive to manufacture, less consumer-friendly, and consume a lot of resources, are rapidly being replaced by these bags.

    Printing Pouches

    There are many kinds of stand-up bags such as, shaped, spouted, liquid, printed, box, retort, foil barrier, inverted, wicket, frangible seal, multi-compartment, EZ-stand and reclosable pouch which breaks into the zipper, hook & loop, slider, and press-to-close categories.

    All of them go through different kinds of printing depending on market needs. The following printing methods are widely used to print logos, names, and other aesthetics on stand-up bags.

    Plate Printing

    The most economic and versatile way to print stand up pouches is with Rotogravure plate printing. Thus, most stand-up bags go through plate printing to add the desired look and information of the top part. The printer has different cylinders which contain different colors that make up the entire design.

    Plate printing offers a very wide color range. Digital printing uses direct surface printing ink  which only uses cyan, magenta, and yellow, black and white. Moreover, with plate printing, you can play around with a mixture of gloss and matte.

    Digital Printing

    The ink used in digital printing does not permeate the substrate being printed on in many cases. It instead forms a thin layer on the substrate, which it adheres to further with UV curing or laser heating.

    The main disadvantage of digital printing is that it is a more expensive method of printing on a basic level; as a result, digital printing is not recommended for long runs. Another significant limitation is its inability to match PMS colors. You can’t have a mix of gloss and matte either. You can only go all matte or all gloss.

    The digital printing method is not economically viable for big runs of up more than 5000 pieces. Multimillion-dollar firms may afford it but smaller firms are left to choose between the cost of buying raw materials and ordering attractive packaging.

    If you’re planning a high-color-count, a short-run project like trial runs, digitally printed stand-up bags are a good option. They are useful too when dealing with a constantly changing regulatory climate or have a lot of SKUs.

    Flexography Printing

    Loosely called flexo, flexography is a printing technique that employs a flexible (rather than a solid) plate. It’s a more recent version of relief printing. Flexo printing is a popular method also used to print graphics, text, and images on stand-up pouches. Flexo printing is often used by a manufacturer on compostable bags to print directly on an outermost paper layer.
